Q: What is a writing prompt?A: In essence, a writing prompt is a phrase or a question whose purpose is to make you think, and for those thoughts to inspire you to write something in the field of creative writing, whether it be a one-shot, five chapter story, or a 300K book. Examples:1) You're stranded on a deserted island with a collection of items that washed up on shore after your boat became marooned on the aforementioned island. You must pick two of the various items before you to aid you in your fight for survival. Which two items will you choose out of: a can of salmon, a bottle of water, a dagger, and a blanket? - This is a fairly long example that I wrote up on the spot. Prompts CAN be this long, however, some are as short as the on below. 2) If you became president of the United States, what would your first order of business be?- See? This one is much shorter, but both can inspire you to think about them, therefore, you can create stories. The next example will be able to do this for you as well, simply with one word. 3) Cold- One word can inspire many questions, and with that, many ideas that may lead to stories. For one: Whose cold? Why are they cold? Are they cold because they have been injured? Where is this person or thing located? And now finally, onto my fourth example- a collection of words in prompt form. 4) Truth or dare- This one inspires the same questions as the previous prompt, only with more words. And now, some writing prompts that I created myself (mostly scary, thought up with my Ghost Hunt story in mind:
Scary Writing Prompts
And some other sets of prompts that I've found from various sources: And some more
Guess What? More.
Yet again, more. Ending Note: I've only used writing prompts for a short amount of time, however, I have already saw how much they can help me when I've come down with writer's block. I would definitely suggest trying these if you ever need that extra push so that you can get your ass up and write.
